A new book in the series “The Future of Europe: views from the Capitals” was published on 4 January 2024. “Enlargement and the Future of Europe” is edited by Prof Dr Michael Kaeding, Prof Dr Johannes Pollak and Paul Schmidt.
This new book analyses the national visions of Member States and EU neighbours for the enlargement of the European Union (EU) and highlights 41 national histories, policies and corresponding public perceptions of European integration. In a geopolitical context in which Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine has given new impetus to EU enlargement, national views vary considerably on the timetable, conditions and reforms needed to bring the Eastern neighbours and the Western Balkans into the European family.
Moreover, EU enlargement policy is not only an investment in peace and stability, but also a political tool to respond to the exploitation of interdependencies and illiberal pressures. This book provides concrete policy recommendations for national governments and the EU on how to move forward productively.
